A free word counter that respects your privacy
Whether you're writing an essay with a strict word limit, crafting a meta description that needs to sit under 160 characters, or checking how long a blog post will take to read, this word counter gives you the numbers instantly. There's no button to press and no page reload — the counts recalculate on every keystroke.
Unlike many online counters, this tool does all of its work inside your browser. Your text is never uploaded, stored, or logged. That makes it safe for drafts, confidential notes, and anything you'd rather keep to yourself.

Frequently asked questions
Is my text sent to a server?
No. Every calculation happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded, saved, or shared.
How is reading time estimated?
We use an average adult silent-reading speed of roughly 200 words per minute. Your actual pace may vary depending on the material.
Does it count words in other languages?
Yes. Words are detected by the spaces and line breaks between them, so it works for most space-separated languages. Languages without spaces between words (such as Chinese or Japanese) are best measured by the character count.
Can I paste from Word or Google Docs?
Absolutely. Paste any text and the counts update immediately. Formatting is ignored — only the words and characters are measured.
